Abhilash Sawant

Abhilash is a PhD student in the Cellular and Molecular Biology graduate program, and is interested in studying structure and function of neural circuits in the retina. His current project combines patch-clamp electrophysiology and anatomical techniques (using light and electron microscopy) to study the role of pre-and post-synaptic inhibition in modulating output of the rod and cone pathways.

Prior to joining UW Madison in 2017, Abhilash did his undergraduate and Masters studies at IISER Pune in India. He carried out his Masters thesis research in Dr. Yukiko Goda’s Lab at RIKEN BSI in Japan, where he studied the role of astrocytes in maintaining heterogeniety of synaptic strengths in a hippocampal network.
